There’s no question all things energetically cleansing are having a moment right now despite their roots in ancient history. Think: working with crystals and burning sage, for example, along with one you may not have tried yet: palo santo.
Palo santo, which translates literally to “holy wood” in Spanish, is the harvested wood from palo santo trees which are found primarily in South America and in some regions of Central America. They're part of the citrus family, with a relation to frankincense and myrrh.
The scientific name of this tree that grows in the South American rainforest is bursera graveolens, or “a bag of oil” and the naturally aromatic wood from this truly unique tree is used in several ways for energetic and healing purposes.
Palo Santo creates a pleasant, fresh smoke that works well in keeping away mosquitoes and other flying insects which is one of the prime uses for the people who live in Ecuador and Peru. Its healing, medicinal and spiritual traits and abilities have been known and used for thousands of years. Keep on reading to discover its other uses.
SPIRITUAL BENEFITS
Inspiring creativity and bringing love and good fortune.
The wood can help brighten energy and promote feelings of positivity and joy. The scent is also shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance clarity and concentration.
Bringing a deeper connection to the divine source.
The uplifting scent is the perfect partner for your meditation practice. Discover peace and feel grounded as you sink into a deeper connection to the Earth and your inner consciousness.
Great for calming the immune and nervous systems for faster recovery of illness.
Palo Santo tea (made by simmering the wood in hot water) acts as a natural digestive aid. The oil can be added to soaps, scrubs, and lotions to cleanse and moisturise the skin. The wood also contains high concentrations of a compound called d-limonene, which is thought to aid in the prevention of a variety of cancers.
BURNING INSTRUCTIONS
Use a candle, match or lighter to ignite your stick of Palo Santo. Hold at about a 45 degree angle pointing the tip down toward the flame.
Allow it to burn for about 30 secs to 1 minute and then blow out.
Move about your workspace, home, car, bathroom or anywhere you would like to clear the energy. The rich smell will also bring peace and clarity to the moment along with good feelings .
When finished, place the stick in a fire proof bowl of metal, glass or clay. The glow will end on its own unless you blow on the ember which will keep the smoke going.
Have you ever used Palo Santo?
Perhaps you prefer burning herbs? I tend to use Palo Santo to cleanse and purify the air in my home and I find the smell relaxing but I've never intentionally used it for energy or spiritual purposes, have you?
